Air conditioning filters come in two types: furnace mounted and return air grill mounted. In Houston we primarily have grill mounted. Grill mounted filters are typically 1” think and are held behind a grill. Finding the grill can be an adventure as it can be mounted on a wall low near the base board or high on a ceiling. This filters can vary dramatically in sizing from 12”x12” to 30”x36”. Many Houston homeowners have multiple return air grills throughout their home.
The following are examples of what these ceiling and wall mounted grills look like:

Once you have found the filter housing you will be able to easily tell what kind of filter you have. Simple remove the grill cover and remove the filter. To remove the grill use either the twist knobs to unlock the hinging grill cover or a screw driver to unscrew the grill from the wall. The most common filter in Houston is an 1” disposable filter that must be replaced regularly. Some homeowners choose to upgrade to washable filters. These filters do not have the cost of replacement but must be frequently washed in order to prevent damage to your system. To find out how often you need to replace or wash you filters, see our Filter Replacement Schedule.
Your standard filtration system was designed to protect the air movement system from large debris and dirt. It does not filter out allergens or improve indoor air quality. The filter your system was designed to operate with is a flat non-pleated filter. Often this filter is blue at the home improvement store. Increasing your filtration by using a pleated filter, washable filter, or advanced filtration system can cause significant damage to your system if design modifications are not made. Before increasing the filtration in your home ask your Houston technician if your system can handle the added work that it will provide.
